ABOUT Deliverance

We want to take a little anxiety out of the idea of deliverance. The more comfortable you are and the more you understand how these things work, the better! 

Deliverance is not typically like in some of the movies people see. If you are a Christian believer, you are not "possessed" by some demon(s) taking full control of you. In the bible in the original language the word possessed is never actually used. The word that is actually used and often translated as possessed is demonized. Translating demonized with the word possessed is not really accurate at all. 

Possessed gives the impression there is some ownership involved and that you lose control to the demonic spirit affecting you. In actuality no spirit other than God's Spirit (Holy Spirit) can have any ownership of anyone. No spirit other than Holy Spirit can ever live in the part of you that is the Holy of Holies (where Holy Spirit lives inside a born-again believer). However spirits affect  and can reside in your flesh or your soul (your, mind, will or emotions).

While they cannot own you, and never have complete control of you, demonic entities can make it really difficult to live a holy life. They can influence you to say or do things you do not want to and would not otherwise say or do. They can cause thoughts, feelings, and at times behaviors you don't not want to have. By influencing the mind, will, and emotions they can cause you to make choices you would not otherwise have made. They can deceive you into having a perspective that is not based in reality, tempt you to sin when you want to stop, cause you to act in self-destructive ways, do things that hurt your relationships or employment, or even do things to harm yourself or others. They may also do things to attempt to hinder you from having or enjoying a relationship with God, such as causing intrusive or even blasphemous thoughts when you are reading the bible, attending church, praying, or worshiping etc.

Demonic entities don't begin to influence you because you are a "bad" person per se. There are spiritual laws that God allows to govern in the spiritual realm. This means just about every decision we make in life has the potential to have spiritual consequences, this can apply whether you have accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and savior or not. For those in relationship with Jesus as their Lord and Savior their salvation is secure, and no demonic spirit can affect that or take it away.  However, many people become born again after living in a way that has opened many doors (given legal rights) to demonic spirits to afflict them. They may have said or done many things that allows demonic entities to afflict them. It may even be that you can be afflicted by spirits that gained access not by something you yourself said or did but by something that was said or done to you by another person. There may be  in your ancestry or past trauma that opened the door to demonic spirits to affect you. 

 And sometimes a believer can unknowingly open doors through things like continued unconfessed sin or by carrying unforgiveness towards someone (whether themselves or others).  Often you may not even realize the open doors that were at one time or are currently in your life. Doors can be opened (legal rights given) to demonic spirits without you even realizing what you were saying or doing. You may have even decided you do not even believe in these kinds of things. But demonic spirits do not actually care what you believe because what you believe or don't believe doesn't alter the truth or the way the spiritual realm operates. And whether or not you were/are aware open doors could be opened doesn't change the fact they have been opened. 

 When you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you receive the Holy Spirit to live inside of you.  The Holy Spirit lives in you to help you live a holy life, to guide you in the plan God has for your life, to correct you and let you know when you are going against what God wants for you, to grow you and change you and ultimately to help you mature spiritually and look more and more like Jesus Christ (this is called sanctification).  You belong to Jesus and are a child of God from the moment you accepted the sacrifice Jesus made to pay for your sin by dying on the cross and decided to live for Jesus. You are from that moment forward already a new creation in Christ Jesus.

In fact, often the reason you can be born again Christians without realizing you are being affected by demonic spirits until years later, is because the power of Holy Spirit is so much stronger than any demonic spirits, that it minimizes the effect the demonic spirit is having on you and you don't become aware until the effect the spirit is having becomes more obvious to you.  

 Demons are trespassers and don't always leave or stop afflicting you even though you put their faith in Christ. Especially if you don't yet understand the authority you have been given as a born-again child of God or know how to use that authority to gain your freedom. Many people when they first put their faith in Jesus still struggle for a time with sin that can continue to provide an open a door to demonic entities. Demons know the spiritual laws you may not yet know and are sneaky trespassers, so most times you need to (through the power and guidance of Holy Spirit) ensure the demon's legal rights are broken and command them to go because they don't want to do so without being made to.

  Ultimately, you may need a brother or sister in Christ who is willing to be the vessel God uses to help you understand and renounce the legal rights the entity afflicting is using to help you to be able to get free.

The truth is the Word of God (the Holy Bible) has already promised you greater is He that is in you (Holy Spirit) than he that is in the world. Breaking free from demonic spirits is not something you can receive from any other human being.  It's something that has already been paid for and given to you through the sacrifice Jesus made for you the cross. Deliverance Ministers do not have to power to actually deliver anyone! As a born-again believer you are a joint heir with Jesus Christ, and because of that you have access to His authority that He promised to us to overcome and spiritually trample on every demonic entity. The goal of a deliverance minister is simply to help you through the process and allow God to use them to stand in faith and help you receive the freedom God has already promised to you. You may not know what needs to be done or you may not yet have the faith to stand in the authority Christ has given you on your own. Sometimes the entities will affect your mind and thoughts to weaken your faith or keep you from using your authority to overcome them. That is when God can work through another believer such as a deliverance minister to help to enforce the victory Jesus has given you over every work of darkness and with the help of the Holy Spirit force those entities to no longer afflict you. We do that by helping you know what legal right could have allowed the entity to afflict you to begin with, helping you understand the need for repentance of that open door, looking together at the role unforgiveness may have in what your experiencing,  and guiding you in being able to renounce the thing that opened the door which removes the legal rights of that demonic entity and allows us to command it to go in Jesus name. 

You do not need to be afraid or concerned with what this process will be like. God is in control of the whole process, and it is His desire for you to be free. Everything that occurs is led by the Holy Spirit and God will send His angels to aid in the process and enforce His will. Most people we have helped report that as they are going through this process, they feel themselves very much in the presence of Jesus.

Once God has allowed you to reach the point of being completely free it's important to know how to maintain that freedom and be cautious not to reopen the same (or other) doors that allow spirits to be able to affect you. We do this through discipleship and ensuring you understand the need to be quick to confess when you become aware you have sinned.

It is important to remember deliverance gets you out of Egypt, but discipleship gets Egypt out of you! Daily walking in relationship and obedience with God and allowing Him to be your source of inner healing is how you get to the promised land and the abundant life the Word of God promises you! By spending time alone with God each day, praying, worshipping, reading the Bible and spending time with other believers, you will be able to become all God has called you to be and live out God's plan for your life!
